Larry David said yes to a biography: 'Oh Jesus. If we must.'

Larry David agreed to his first authorised biography with four words: "Oh Jesus. If we must."
That email, reported in a review published on 19 October 2026, set the terms for the project. An authorised biography, meaning the subject gives permission and takes part, is unusual for David. He cooperated anyway.
The book is Emperor of Nothing: The Making of Larry David by Blake J. Harris. Its publisher is Dey Street Books. It runs to 576 pages and is listed for publication on 20 October 2026 The Wall Street Journal HarperCollins.
Harris is best known for writing about the technology business. His previous biography subject was Palmer Luckey, the virtual reality entrepreneur. This is a change of field, from Silicon Valley to television comedy The Guardian.
David co-created the sitcom Seinfeld in 1989. He was 41 when he began writing a pilot, meaning a single test episode, with Jerry Seinfeld. He later twice quit the show over interference by NBC executives.
The book stays close to that working life. It includes multi-page breakdowns of how two well-known Seinfeld episodes, "The Soup Nazi" and "The Chinese Restaurant", were put together. The focus is on drafts, decisions and rewrites rather than life off the set.
That emphasis has shaped early coverage. The Wall Street Journal published a review titled "'Emperor of Nothing' Review: Ahead of the 'Curb'" on 9 October 2026. The New York Times published a review on 18 October 2026. The Guardian followed with its review on 19 October 2026.
The Journal review states that the book concentrates on David's career and gives short shrift to his romantic history. The publisher listing describes the title as the first authorised biography of David and notes that it was a Kobo Best Books of the Month pick for October 2026.
What makes this stand out for readers is the access. For fans, this means hearing David's account of the arguments, walkouts and rewrites behind a long-running comedy career, told with his cooperation but in his own reluctant style.
