Barack Obama has spent the finale of Larry David's HBO sketch series revisiting the one fashion decision that haunted his presidency: the tan suit.

In the closing sketch of Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, Obama returns to the 2014 incident in which he wore a tan-coloured suit to a press conference about ISIS, sparking a media firestorm that drew criticism from the New York Times, GQ, and Fox News — and eventually earned its own Wikipedia page. This time, he gets to relitigate it. Variety

The sketch pins the blame on Larry David. In the scene, David spills a mango smoothie on the navy blue suit Obama planned to wear, then persuades the President to put on the tan one instead. The idea came from Obama himself and Higher Ground executive producer Ethan Lewis, who brainstormed the concept together.

Obama's involvement goes beyond a cameo. He appeared in the first episode to help introduce the show, and his production company Higher Ground — the banner he shares with Michelle Obama — produces the series. Larry David and Jeff Schaffer serve as co-creators.

Schaffer, who directed the finale, called working with Obama "one of the coolest things I've ever gotten the chance to do." He praised Obama's improv, comic timing, and acting instincts. During filming, Obama even offered Larry David directing notes — at one point telling him, "Larry, you're coming in late!"

The Oval Office set built for the sketch had its own layer of authenticity. Michael S. Smith, the interior designer who led the 2010 makeover of the real White House Oval Office under the Obamas, crafted the replica. When Obama walked onto the set, he said: "This is unbelievable. It looks just like it was when I was here."

Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness is a seven-episode limited series that premiered on HBO on 26 June 2026 at 9 p.m. ET, with new episodes released weekly. The show features David travelling through history across four sketches per episode. IndieWire

A former president producing and starring in his own comedy sketch about a decade-old wardrobe controversy is not the usual trajectory for a political figure. Obama has leaned into entertainment before through Higher Ground's documentary and feature film deals, but stepping in front of the camera for a scripted comedy — and handing himself the punchline — is a different register entirely.

For viewers, the finale offers the rare sight of a former president doing straight comedy with one of television's most reliably uncomfortable performers. Schaffer's assessment of Obama's timing suggests the role was more than a stunt. Whether the tan suit is ever truly forgiven, at least it now has a mango smoothie to blame.
