Modern Warfare 4 campaign earns 92% on Steam ahead of 23 October launch

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's campaign has opened to a Very Positive rating on Steam, at 92 percent positive from more than 3,100 user reviews. That makes it the highest-rated Call of Duty in more than a decade, as reported on 19 October 2026 Eurogamer.
That is a sharp turnaround. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 sits at 37 percent and a Mostly Negative rating on Steam. The 2019 Modern Warfare reboot holds 79 percent for Mostly Positive, while 2022's Modern Warfare 2 is at 45 percent for Mixed.
Black Ops 7 also holds the lowest Metacritic user score ever for a Call of Duty game Eurogamer. Metacritic is a review aggregator that collects critic and player scores in one place. The gap puts Modern Warfare 4 in a very different position with players.
The new campaign is a little over six hours long. IGN scored it 8/10 in its review. The campaign is the solo story mode, fought against computer-controlled opponents, and it arrived first.
Campaign Early Access, a chance to play the story before the official launch, started on 16 October. Access required digitally pre-ordering any edition of the game. That early window remains open up to the official launch on 23 October Call of Duty.
More of the package unlocks in stages. Pre-order owners get the DMZ mode on 20 October. DMZ is an extraction mode, where squads enter a map to collect loot and get out alive. Traditional multiplayer, the head-to-head online play, becomes available for everyone on 23 October.
Day one brings 12 all-new 6v6 maps. That means six players a side in the core online modes. The game is a standalone release, sold as its own title rather than an add-on to an existing one.
It will not be available on Game Pass at launch Call of Duty. Game Pass is Microsoft's subscription service, which offers a library of games for a monthly fee. Digital pre-orders include the Hunter Killer Operator Skin, an outfit for a soldier character, and the Gilded Pearl Camo Pack, a decorative finish for weapons.
What makes this stand out is the order of play. Fans got a full week with the story before scores and arguments about multiplayer began. For players deciding on 23 October, that means the first verdict is already in.
