Steam Next Fest 2026 opens with 8,202 free demos

Steam's October Next Fest has opened with 8,202 free playable demos, more than double the number at last year's event, according to Eurogamer.
The event runs from Oct. 19 to Oct. 26 on Steam, the PC storefront operated by Valve, according to Steam. Every demo is free. Each one is for a game that has not yet launched.
That is a lot to sort through. Valve has set up a dedicated October 2026 press preview page on the store to help players and press browse the catalogue, according to Steam's press preview page.
Next Fest is not only downloads. The October 2026 edition also includes developer livestreams and chats, where teams talk through their games and answer questions. The streams run alongside the demos for the full week.
The scale comes with a wrinkle. About 17 percent of demos at the June event before this Next Fest disclosed generative AI use, where developers state that AI tools were used in making the game, according to Eurogamer. That disclosure rule requires Steam developers to say if their game contains AI-made content.
Some developers are wary of showing too much too early. Alliance Arts cancelled its demo for Drunken Goddess Reflux, saying it feared the demo would be used to imitate or replicate the game's presentation and gameplay with AI or other tools before launch. The same report also pointed to Needle in a Haystack, an independent game that has faced a flood of quickly made copies on Steam.
What makes this stand out is the contrast. Next Fest is built for discovery, a chance for small teams to find players before release. This year that opportunity sits alongside real concern about how fast a demo can be copied.
For players, this means choice. Thousands of demos will only be live for the week, with many disappearing after Oct. 26. Wishlist buttons and streams are the simplest way to keep track.
