Niffenegger returns with 560-page sequel to The Time Traveler's Wife

Audrey Niffenegger has published a sequel to The Time Traveler's Wife, the novel first published in 2003 that built her readership around the world.
The new book is called Life Out of Order. The Guardian published a review of it on October 19, 2026, under a headline asking whether the sequel measures up to The Time Traveler's Wife The Guardian.
The focus has shifted a generation. Life Out of Order tells the story of Alba, the time-travelling daughter of Henry and Claire, the couple at the centre of the first novel. Alba lives with Chrono-Displacement Disorder, a rare fictional condition that causes sudden, involuntary time travel. It is the same condition her father, Henry DeTamble, lives with.
That is a long thread to pick up again. Niffenegger took 14 years to write the sequel. She discussed that extended writing period in an interview published by The Guardian on October 10, 2026 The Guardian.
The physical facts are straightforward. Life Out of Order runs to 560 pages. In the British market it is published by Jonathan Cape at £22. It was released in the US on October 6, 2026, and in the UK on October 13, 2026, according to the author's website the author's website.
The original has kept a large footprint during the wait. The Time Traveler's Wife has sold more than 9 million copies in 40 languages. It has been adapted for Hollywood and for HBO.
For new readers, the set-up needs little untangling. Henry disappears through time without warning. Claire builds a life around his absences and returns. Alba, their daughter, inherits the pattern and must work out how to love, work and plan when her own timeline will not stay in order.
What makes this stand out in publishing terms is the distance between books. Twenty-three years separate the 2003 debut of the story from this 560-page continuation. Few commercial novels get a direct sequel after that long, with the same central family and the same time-travel rules intact.
