Nicole Miller will reach 45 years in business in 2027. The American designer started her namesake company in 1982. She set out the history in an interview published on 20 October 2026. Women's Wear Daily

She trained fast. Miller attended the Rhode Island School of Design and the Chambre Syndicale in Paris, earning two degrees in four years. After college she worked in New York City for Clovis Ruffin and then for Rain Cheetas.

She met her future business partner while working at P.J. Walsh. That partner was Bud Konheim. He worked alongside her for 37 years.

The company began small. It started as a contemporary dress company, contemporary being industry shorthand for clothes priced between mass market and designer, with a focus on making fun dresses. Its New York City showroom is at 525 Seventh Avenue.

The first runway show followed in 1991. A runway show is a staged presentation of a seasonal collection. She moved into beauty two years later, in 1993, with the introduction of her first fragrance, Nicole Miller. Women's Wear Daily

She became widely associated with popularising the little black dress, the simple dark dress worn for many occasions. The business kept spreading. It now covers more than 45 fashion and lifestyle categories across women's, men's, kids, home and beauty. Women's Wear Daily

That reach went beyond clothing. Miller teamed up with Puppies Behind Bars for limited-edition dog accessories. She also designed dog blankets for the group's "Paws & Reflect" seniors programme. Women's Wear Daily

Her Spring 2027 ready-to-wear listing, ready-to-wear meaning clothes made in standard sizes rather than made to order, points to swirled bright colours, psychedelic prints and flirty silhouettes.

For fans, this means one name now touches many rails and shelves. Dresses. Menswear. Kidswear. Home goods. Perfume. Dog blankets too. It started with a dressmaker who learned pattern and cut on two continents, then found a partner who stayed for almost four decades.
