National rises to 32% in 1News-Verian poll, Labour slips to 27%

National has risen to 32% party support in the latest 1News-Verian poll, up four percentage points and five points ahead of Labour.
Labour was down one point to 27%. The NZ Herald reported that figure was down to the level of its 2023 defeat NZ Herald. The result widened the gap between the two major parties RNZ.
The Green Party was on 16%, up one point. ACT was on 11%, also up one point. New Zealand First was on 8%, down two points. Te Pāti Māori was on 0.7%.
When voters were asked who they preferred as prime minister, National leader Christopher Luxon was on 20%, unchanged. Labour leader Chris Hipkins was on 17%, down three points.
A week earlier, Hipkins and Luxon had been tied in the same measure, according to the 13 October poll 1News.
A seat projection based on the latest poll gave National 38 seats, ACT 13 seats and New Zealand First 9 seats. That is 60 seats combined in a 120-seat Parliament.
The previous week's poll had put National on 28% support and projected 34 seats for the party 1News. A 1News analysis on 20 October noted National held 49 MPs at the time 1News.
The poll was conducted from 15 to 19 October among 1,003 eligible voters. It surveyed 500 voters by mobile phone and 503 voters online using online panels. The maximum sampling error was about 3.1 percentage points at 95% confidence.
