Mike Tindall admits he missed his moment when he first met Zara Phillips. He told her he "didn't pay attention the first time around". The confession came as the couple retold the story together.

They talked through that first encounter on the Talk Horse podcast, a conversation about horses and riding life. The meeting took place at the Manly Wharf Bar in Sydney during the 2003 Rugby World Cup, according to Hello! Magazine. Another account dates their first meeting to an Australian pub in November 2003.

Tindall set the scene in simple terms. Zara was out with friends. The group was settled into a long lunch at the bar.

He described them as "very loud". He missed her completely.

Zara remembered. "You didn't really notice me," she told him during the chat. Her tone was teasing rather than annoyed.

The exchange is brief and easy. Mike does most of the explaining. Zara does most of the correcting.

That back-and-forth is familiar to anyone who has heard them interviewed before. He offers a blunt first impression. She answers it in a line.

What makes this stand out is how ordinary the setting sounds. No formal introduction. No arranged meeting. Just a busy bar, a long lunch, and a group of friends talking loudly enough to be remembered for it.

For fans, this fills in the start of a well-known marriage. Zara was then Zara Phillips. She is now Zara Tindall. The place stays the same in both tellings: Sydney, in Australia, during that World Cup autumn.

The couple did not dress it up. Mike said he failed to notice her. Zara agreed with him. That is the whole story, told in their own words.
