Helldivers 2 has a new referee. Arrowhead Game Studios swapped the co-op shooter's anti-cheat software on 20 October 2026, dropping GameGuard for Easy Anti-Cheat.

Anti-cheat is software that runs alongside a game to detect cheating programs. Arrowhead said its version of GameGuard, the previous system, was not as effective as it could have been, according to Eurogamer. The change took effect on PC on 20 October, GamingOnLinux reported.

The studio described Easy Anti-Cheat as an industry standard used in more than 200 games. It said the new system should better protect fair play and the integrity of Helldivers 2 and the Galactic War, the game's ongoing shared campaign in which all players contribute to the same war effort.

Extra security tools are also in place alongside Easy Anti-Cheat to improve its effectiveness. The switch forms part of a crackdown on cheat mods, Rock Paper Shotgun reported.

Not every mod is a cheat. Mods are player-made changes, from new outfits to tweaked behaviour. Arrowhead said some harmless cosmetic mods will need updates to keep working with Easy Anti-Cheat. Mods that change the game for other players may stop working entirely.

Players who think a harmless mod has been blocked by mistake can report it through Zendesk, the studio's customer support system. Arrowhead said it will review those reports.

For players on Linux and Steam Deck, compatibility will remain safe after the switch, according to PCGuide. That matters because anti-cheat changes can sometimes break games on those systems. Valve's Steam Deck is a handheld gaming PC, and Linux is the open-source operating system it runs on.

For players, this means little changes on the surface. Same battles. Stricter policing behind the scenes.
