Brad Caleb Kane wanted nudity in Crystal Lake. He did not get it.

Kane is the showrunner, the writer-producer who runs a series day to day, on Peacock's reboot of the Friday the 13th franchise, meaning a new screen version of the horror story built for television, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The production company behind the series is A24.

For readers new to the credits, the set-up is straightforward. Peacock is the service that will show the series. A24 is the production company making it. Kane is the person hired to run it creatively from scripts to set.

He addressed the missing nudity in an interview with The Wrap. He said he tried to include it and he tried to include more sex scenes, but he was overruled on both counts.

“Sometimes you get overruled in these things,” Kane said. He put it more bluntly in a second line from the same interview: “That's America. You can give the kids the violence, but God forbid they see some breasts.”

The comments were first picked up by Bloody Disgusting, which reported on 19 October that his attempts to add more sex scenes had been blocked. The fuller quotes were then carried by The Hollywood Reporter on 20 October.

In television, that kind of block is normal. A showrunner leads the writers and the shoot, but a streamer, studio or standards group can still say no to specific behaviour on screen. Kane did not name who overruled him in the quotes reported so far. He only made clear that he argued and lost.

What makes this stand out is the line Kane drew between violence and nudity. His point was simple. Gore could stay. Bare skin could not. That balance shifts from show to show.

For fans, this means expectations can be set early. Crystal Lake will arrive as a Friday the 13th story shaped for Peacock, with A24 producing, Kane running the room, and less sex on screen than its showrunner first wanted. The story either gets finished or it does not, and this is one choice that is now on the record.
