Netflix lines up Rob Lowe documentary, film and podcast in 10-day run
Rob Lowe will front three different Netflix releases in just 10 days, starting with a documentary about his own life and career. The dates span Nov. 24 to Dec. 3.
The run begins Nov. 24 with 'Rob Lowe: The Outsider', which Netflix has dated for late November, according to Variety. The documentary is directed by Chris Smith. It follows Lowe's acting career from early films 'The Outsiders' and 'St. Elmo's Fire' through to the political drama series 'The West Wing'.
The date confirms a project Lowe had already talked about in public. He accidentally announced the Netflix documentary about his life and career in late September, as reported by The News. Netflix has now given that project its full title, director credit and release date.
Eight days after the documentary, Lowe is back in a scripted role. Netflix's holiday film 'In A Holidaze', starring Lowe and Maddie Ziegler, premieres Dec. 2. A premiere here means its first release on the service for subscribers to stream. The film lands right in the middle of the Lowe run, between the documentary and the podcast.
The third part of the run is audio moving to video. From Dec. 3, Lowe's podcast 'Literally! With Rob Lowe' will be available to stream on Netflix. More than 30 library episodes will be offered at launch. Library episodes is trade speak for older instalments that first came out elsewhere and are now being made available again in one place.
New instalments will keep coming after launch. Fresh video episodes of the podcast will be released every Thursday on Netflix, giving the show a regular weekly slot on the service. That pattern is familiar to podcast listeners, but it also matches how television schedules new episodes week by week.
The podcast move is set up as a three-way partnership among SiriusXM, Netflix and Lowe. SiriusXM is the audio company behind the podcast. Netflix acts as the streaming home for both the back catalogue and the new Thursday episodes.
For viewers, this means three distinct ways to catch Lowe in quick succession. The documentary arrives Nov. 24. The holiday story follows Dec. 2. The interview show starts Dec. 3.
