Katie Boulter beat Viktorija Golubic 6-2 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals of the Japan Open in Osaka, and the match was over in under an hour. Boulter is seeded eighth, which means tournament organisers ranked her among the stronger players in the draw and placed her where she would be less likely to meet the top names early.

The first set was decided by one long run. Boulter, the British number one before this week, was tested early. She saved a break point in the opening game, a chance for her opponent to win the game on the other player's serve. From 2-2 in the first set, she then won nine games in a row. That stretch turned a close contest into a comfortable one, and Golubic, a player from Switzerland, did not win another game until Boulter led 5-0 in the second set.

Wind made the conditions hard. BBC Sport reported Boulter's comments after the match. She said she was pleased with how she handled the gusts, and that staying patient in the wind was the key. In tennis, a strong breeze can push a ball long or drag it wide, so players who keep their shots low and their targets simple often do better than those who go for lines.

The win also changes the British ranking picture. Boulter lost the top British spot to Sonny Kartal on Monday, before her run in Osaka began. She was set to regain it after this week's results, according to BBC Sport. The British number one is simply the highest-ranked British woman on the WTA tour, the women's professional circuit.

Boulter's previous match was also a straight-sets win. She won her first-round match 6-3 6-1 on Tuesday, so this was her second win in a row.

Golubic and Boulter have met before. Golubic beat Boulter in three sets in Cleveland in 2025, while Boulter won in straight sets in the second round of the Ostrava Open, a result that evened their head-to-head record at one win each. Golubic had reached her first tour-level quarter-final of that season in Cleveland, so both players know how a match like this can turn.

Boulter's next opponent will be either Antonia Ruzic of Croatia or Kayla Day of the United States. Those two players meet in their own last-16 match, and the winner will face Boulter for a place in the semi-finals. The quarter-finals are the last round before the semi-finals, where the final four players are left.

For Boulter, the result is clear. She is through, the British ranking is close to being hers again, and the wind did not stop her from winning in under an hour.
