Essex have signed wicketkeeper-batter George Bell from Lancashire on a permanent two-year contract, turning a loan spell into a longer commitment.

Bell, who is 24, first joined Essex on loan in early September for the rest of the 2026 season. Essex Cricket confirmed the permanent move in an announcement dated 21 October, with Bell giving his own reaction to the switch. A wicketkeeper is the player who stands behind the stumps, catching edges and gathering balls that the batter misses, so the role demands quick hands and concentration across long days in the field.

Bell played three matches for Essex at the end of the season and scored in the 60s on each occasion. BBC Sport reports that the club's decision followed that short run. Across 37 first-class matches, the longer format used in the English county game, he has scored more than 1,400 runs. He has nine half-centuries, meaning scores of 50 or more, and a highest score of 99.

Bell made his first-class debut for Lancashire in 2022 and has also played for England at under-21 level. He was born in Manchester on 25 September 2002 and bats right-handed. He also bowls right-arm offbreak, a slower spinning delivery that turns from leg to off.

Essex director of cricket Chris Silverwood said the club had been impressed by Bell's performances, attitude, work ethic and mindset. Silverwood added that Bell had more than earned a permanent deal.

For Essex, the signing gives them a wicketkeeper-batter who is under contract beyond this season, rather than one who must be sought again next year. For Bell, it means a settled home at a county where he has already shown he can score runs under pressure.
