A new trailer for Tangles, an animated feature about early-onset Alzheimer's disease in one family, has been released, and the film is due in cinemas next month. Variety reported the trailer on 21 October 2026.

The film is mostly drawn in black and white, using two-dimensional animation. It follows Sarah, a 20-something illustrator who moves home to look after her mother after her mother is diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Early-onset means the disease appears earlier in life than usual, often before the age of 65.

The story comes from Sarah Leavitt's graphic memoir Tangles: A Story About Alzheimer's, My Mother and Me. Leavitt co-wrote the screenplay with Leah Nelson and Trev Renney. Nelson, a co-founder of the animation studio Giant Ant, has spoken about the project as a long one. At the Middleburg Film Festival, she told audiences after a screening that making the film had taken roughly ten years.

The voice cast includes Abbi Jacobson, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Beanie Feldstein, Seth Rogen and Samira Wiley. Seth Rogen and Lauren Miller Rogen are among the producers. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is also credited as a producer, and the film is made through Monarch Media, Point Grey Pictures, Giant Ant and LYLAS Pictures.

The film's route to cinemas has taken several steps. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where films are often sold to distributors who then decide how and when to release them. Variety reported in August that Independent Film Company, formerly known as IFC, had acquired it for a theatrical run that qualifies a film for Oscar consideration. A qualifying run is a set number of days in paid cinema screenings, which the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences requires before a film can enter its awards.

Awards watchers are already keeping an eye on it. Variety's early predictions for the 2027 Golden Globes include Tangles. Those predictions are guesses about nominations, not decisions, and the Golden Globes will not be handed out until after the film opens.

For now the calendar is simple. The trailer is out, the cast and producers are public, and the film is set to reach cinemas in November 2026. Each of those steps came from a decision by someone: a writer choosing to adapt a memoir, a producer choosing a festival, a distributor choosing a date. The result will be a film that a wide audience can see for the first time.
