Tom Cruise Named Recipient of 52nd AFI Life Achievement Award

Tom Cruise will receive the 52nd AFI Life Achievement Award, the American Film Institute's board of trustees announced on 21 October 2026. The honour will be presented at a gala tribute at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Saturday, 24 April 2027, according to Deadline.
Kathleen Kennedy, chair of the AFI board of trustees, called Cruise a global icon. She said the presentation is AFI's honour as well as his, Variety reported.
The award is one of the best-known honours in film, given to one person a year. It was first presented in 1973 to the director John Ford. It recognises people who have advanced the art of film, shown staying power over a long career, and won recognition from critics, fellow film-makers and audiences. Not every year has produced a winner. The Hollywood Reporter notes that no honouree is recorded for 2020, 2021 or 2023.
The most recent honourees before Cruise include Eddie Murphy, who accepted the 51st award at a star-filled tribute in April 2026, and Francis Ford Coppola, who was honoured in 2025. Nicole Kidman was honoured in 2024.
Cruise, now 64, has spent a career spanning several decades as an actor, producer and philanthropist. He is a three-time Academy Award nominee. He received best actor nominations for Born on the Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire, and a best supporting actor nomination for Magnolia. He also earned a nomination as a producer of Top Gun: Maverick, which was nominated for best picture. In 2025 he received an Honorary Oscar at the Academy Governors Awards, Deadline reported.
His films have grossed nearly $13 billion worldwide over his career, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That total covers titles such as Risky Business, Rain Man, A Few Good Men, Minority Report and several Mission: Impossible films, along with the Top Gun series.
He is still working. Cruise currently stars in Digger, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, Deadline reported. He is also set to return as Cole Trickle in Days of Thunder 2, which is scheduled for release in 2028, with Anne Hathaway also starring.
The gala will include clips from his work, tributes from friends and collaborators, and an acceptance speech from Cruise. All proceeds will go to AFI's education and arts programmes, The Hollywood Reporter said. The American Film Institute is a nonprofit organisation that promotes the moving image as an art form.
For film fans, the announcement sets two dates on the calendar: the April 2027 tribute in Los Angeles, and the 2028 arrival of the next Days of Thunder.
