Star Wars Battlefront 3 Reportedly in Development at DICE and Respawn

A new Star Wars Battlefront game is reportedly in development, with EA's DICE and Respawn studios working on it. Eurogamer attributes the information to "multiple sources" cited by Variety. No title, platform or release date has been announced.

The clearest official hint so far came in a memo. EA executives told staff that Respawn and DICE are collaborating on a new project, but the memo did not say what the project is. Joe Brammer, head of the studio Wardogs, wrote on X that the two studios were working together on Battlefront 3.

The rumour began with Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine, which reported through Giant Bomb that Disney was looking for a studio to develop Battlefront 3. That first report named DICE and Bungie as possible teams. Respawn was not on that early list.

Both studios have Star Wars history. DICE is the Swedish developer behind the Battlefront games, the shooters where players fight across large battlefields. Respawn makes the Titanfall games and developed Jedi: Fallen Order, a single-player adventure set in the Star Wars universe.

Battlefront has a rocky recent past. In 2022, EA reportedly cancelled several Star Wars projects that were in development, including a follow-up to Battlefront 2. Earlier that year, Eurogamer reported that DICE had no plans for a Battlefront 3 and was focusing fully on Battlefield, citing a VentureBeat report. Those plans have clearly changed since then, according to the new reporting.

The work is happening during a difficult period for EA. Empire reports that development is taking place amid company-wide layoffs and the closure of BioWare, the studio behind the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series. EA is also now privately owned. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, together with Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, bought the company for US$55 billion in a leveraged buyout, a deal financed largely with borrowed money.

For players, the practical questions are still open. Nobody outside the studios has said when a new Battlefront might arrive, what it would be called, or which systems it would run on. Until EA says more, the details will come from reports, memos and social media posts.
