The Gotham Film & Media Institute will give Focus Features' Elsinore a Gotham Legacy Tribute at the Gotham Film Awards on Nov. 30, Variety reported on Oct. 22. The ceremony takes place at Cipriani Wall Street in New York.

The tribute honours the film's subject, the Scottish actor Ian Charleson. He died in 1990, and he is best known for playing Eric Liddell in Chariots of Fire, the film that won the Oscar for best picture.

Elsinore tells the story of Charleson's last stage role. He was cast as Hamlet, and he took on the part after receiving an AIDS diagnosis. The film follows that final stage performance. TheaterMania reported in September that Andrew Scott plays Charleson.

The Gotham tribute also honours Scott, the star, along with screenwriter Stephen Beresford and director Simon Stone. The cast also includes Olivia Colman, who plays Dr. Margaret Johnson, Billie Piper, Johnny Flynn and Joe Locke. The film is produced by Studiocanal, LD Entertainment, Lucky Red and Magnolia Mae Films.

The film had its first public screenings earlier this autumn. It premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado, then played in the Special Presentations section at the Toronto International Film Festival. At Toronto it also won the International People's Choice Award, which is voted by audience members.

Cinema release comes next. Elsinore opens on Nov. 20 in limited release, which means a small number of theatres at first. It will widen over the Thanksgiving holiday in late November and keep expanding through December. That schedule puts the film in cinemas during the busiest stretch of the awards season, when audiences and voters often see new releases.

The Gotham Film Awards have their own calendar too. Nominees for the 36th annual awards will be announced on Oct. 27, five days from now, and the Nov. 30 ceremony will close the season for the Gotham prizes.
