Katana Zero's Free Expansion Is Still Coming, Six Years On

The free expansion for Katana Zero, a fast-paced action game, is still in development, and its developer says it will stay free. Askiisoft said on April 10, 2025, that the add-on, known as DLC (downloadable content, extra material sold or given away after a game launches), was still coming and would still be free.
The game itself came out in 2019. Its developer, Askiisoft, first talked about a free expansion in March 2021. In a development update that month, the studio said the add-on had grown to six times the size it had originally planned. It also said the add-on would be a bit over half the size of the main game.
Askiisoft described the new material as more like a second game than a small patch, and called it "Katana 1.5." The studio said it would add more levels, new mechanics, enemies, bosses and story elements that tie into the original. At that time, it said the plan was set and the scope would not grow further.
The March 2021 update also said there was no confirmed release timing yet. That remains the case. Askiisoft has not announced a release date for the expansion.
Game Informer reported in April 2025 that the free DLC was nearly done, after six years of work. The outlet's report came the same month as Askiisoft's statement that the add-on was still on the way.
For players, the story is about waiting. Many people who finished the original game in 2019 have been holding out for more, and the expansion is the next thing on the list. The studio's position is that it is still building the content and that players will not be charged for it.
Development schedules for games of this size often shift, and a longer timeline is not unusual for a project that expands during production. Askiisoft has not yet said when players can expect to play the new material.
What comes next is a release date, or a fresh update from the studio. Until then, the free expansion has a confirmed plan, a stated scope, and a promise that it will cost nothing to play.
