A trailer for Mass Effect Universe has leaked online, offering a glimpse of the game BioWare was building before Electronic Arts (EA) closed the studio. The clip first appeared on Reddit, and Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier has confirmed that it is real.

According to VideoGamesChronicle, the trailer was for the Mass Effect game BioWare was working on up until its closure. A small team inside the studio put it together from pre-production assets, the early art, models and builds made before full production begins.

The footage opens with a message saying it is in-engine, meaning it was rendered in the game's own engine, the software a studio uses to build a game. IGN reports that the clip features returning characters. The story it teases is a small-scale spy thriller centred on Liara T'Soni, a familiar face from the original trilogy. The setting is the Milky Way after the Reaper war, the conflict that closes that trilogy.

The leak lands against a difficult backdrop for the series. EA closed BioWare and cancelled Mass Effect Universe. Around fifty employees are being let go as the studio shuts down, part of wider layoffs at the publisher. IGN also reported that a Mass Effect 5 trailer was reportedly ready to go before the cancellation.

Earlier, in November 2025, BioWare said EA remained committed to developing Mass Effect 5. That position has since changed with the closure. A Mass Effect television series, separate from the games, remains in production.

For players, the trailer is the clearest public look at a project that will not reach shelves. It is also a reminder of how much work goes into a game long before a release date is set. Every trailer, scene and set piece passes through many hands, and most of that work never leaves the studio.
