Mass Effect TV Series Remains in Development After BioWare Closure

Amazon's planned Mass Effect TV series is still in development, even though Electronic Arts has closed BioWare and cancelled the next Mass Effect game. According to IGN's reporting, which Video Games Chronicle cited on 22 October 2026, everyone previously announced for the show remains attached to it.
The idea is older than the closure. Amazon was first reported to be nearing a deal for a Mass Effect series in 2021. Variety reported on 7 November 2024 that the show was officially in development at Amazon MGM Studios. Karim Zreik, Ari Arad and BioWare's Michael Gamble were set as executive producers. An executive producer is a senior figure who oversees a production's direction and funding, rather than the day-to-day filming.
Gamble also oversaw the next Mass Effect game before its cancellation. He has confirmed that the live-action series will be set after the timeline of the original trilogy of games. It will not retell the story of Commander Shepard, the player-controlled hero of those games.
EA announced the closure of BioWare and the cancellation of the next Mass Effect game. In an update titled "Building EA's Next Chapter," published on 21 October 2026, the company said a small team at BioWare had been working on early development for Mass Effect.
The studio's ownership has changed hands recently. EA agreed in September 2025 to be acquired by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners for US$55 billion. The sale was completed two months before the BioWare closure announcement. The deal was a leveraged buyout, meaning it was funded largely by borrowed money. According to the same IGN reporting, it left EA with around US$18 billion in debt and about US$1.8 billion a year in interest payments.
Gamble reacted to the closure on his own account. He wrote that fans' support had meant everything to him across his 17 years at BioWare. He also added a lighter note: "At least I don't have to call in sick when GTA 6 comes out."
For fans, the main news is that the TV project has not been shelved along with the game. The show's creative team is the same as when it was announced, and its story will sit apart from the games' main characters. Players who want more Mass Effect will have to wait and see what comes next.
