Former OpenAI Product Chief Kevin Weil Joins Stoke Space Board

Kevin Weil, who most recently led product development at OpenAI, has joined the board of Stoke Space, a Seattle-area startup developing reusable rockets to challenge SpaceX's market dominance. CEO Andy Lapsa confirmed the appointment to TechCrunch.
Weil's career spans two decades of consumer technology and platform companies: Twitter, Meta, Planet Labs, and OpenAI. He served as OpenAI's chief product officer from June 2024 until October 2025, when he transitioned to leading an internal research program aimed at accelerating scientific discovery with the company's AI models. That program was consolidated across OpenAI in April 2026, and Weil departed shortly after.
Weil's connection to Stoke Space predates the board seat. He and his wife Elizabeth invested in the company through their venture fund, Scribble Ventures. Stoke Space was founded by Lapsa in 2020, completed Y Combinator's accelerator program, and has become one of the most closely tracked competitors in the reusable-rocket market that SpaceX has led since the Falcon 9 booster first landed successfully a decade ago.
Stoke Space has raised $1.34 billion in total funding. This includes an extended Series D round announced on February 10, 2026, valued at $860 million, according to the company's announcement. TechCrunch's reporting refers to an initial Series D of $510 million closed in 2025—the difference likely reflects timing between the initial close and the later extension. The company is based in Kent, Washington.
Stoke Space's engineering focus is Nova, a rocket designed for complete and rapid reusability—meaning both the main booster and upper stage are recovered and flown again. Full reusability has proven a tougher engineering challenge than SpaceX's current approach of recovering only the booster, and it is the technical gamble that has drawn sustained comparison between Stoke and SpaceX since the startup's founding.
Weil's board appointment naturally raises questions about whether OpenAI itself has plans to enter the launch business. A Wall Street Journal report cited by TechCrunch indicated that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had explored a deal involving Stoke Space as part of an effort to build a SpaceX competitor. Lapsa declined to comment on that report directly, telling TechCrunch that Weil's role is to contribute to Stoke Space's own work rather than serve as a link to any OpenAI initiative. Neither Weil nor Stoke Space made him available for further comment, leaving his own account of the appointment unstated.
The personal dynamics here matter. Altman and Elon Musk have been public adversaries for years—dating back to Musk's departure from OpenAI's board and subsequent disagreements over the company's direction. SpaceX's launch business is central to Musk's broader commercial empire, which makes any OpenAI-connected move into rockets newsworthy on its merits, separate from whether a formal deal takes shape.
Lapsa's background adds another layer. Before founding Stoke Space, he worked at Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin, a launch provider that has spent years trying to match SpaceX on reusable rockets and flight cadence. A board that now includes someone from OpenAI, alongside a founder from Blue Origin, puts Stoke Space at a crossroads of the industry's most significant rivalries—Altman versus Musk, and Bezos versus Musk—without the company itself having clarified on the record whether it aligns with either side.
What remains verifiable is narrower than the story it invites. Weil holds a board seat. Stoke Space has substantial capital, a target date for Nova's first flight, and a CEO who is, for now, framing the appointment as separate from any narrative about OpenAI's rocket plans. Whether Weil's product and AI-research background will influence Stoke's engineering strategy, or whether his primary value is investor relations and strategic access, has not been detailed publicly. As reusable-launch economics become more tightly linked to satellite networks, AI compute infrastructure, and the demand both create, a board appointment that looks narrow today could shape outcomes well beyond Stoke Space's own funding if Nova reaches orbit on schedule.
