Princess Leonor Hosts Awards Winners on Her Own in Spain

Princess Leonor of Spain hosted a private reception for the winners of the Princess of Asturias Awards on Friday, 23 October 2026. It was the first time she did so without her parents, King Felipe and Queen Letizia, at her side, according to Town & Country.
Leonor is the heir to the Spanish throne. Spain's heir holds the title Princess of Asturias, named for the northern region of Asturias. That title also gives her a role in the awards. As heir, she serves as honorary president of the Princess of Asturias Foundation, the group that runs the prizes.
The awards began in 1981. Each winner receives a 50,000-euro prize, a diploma, and a statuette designed by the Catalan painter Joan Miró. The ceremony was held on Friday at the Teatro Campoamor, a theater in Oviedo, the regional capital. The King and Queen presided, with their daughters beside them. Leonor presented the insignia, the official emblem of each award, to the eight laureates.
The week began on Thursday evening, 22 October, with a concert at the Principe Felipe Auditorium in Oviedo. Leonor attended with her parents and her younger sister, Infanta Sofía. An infanta is the title for the king's daughters who are not heir to the throne.
This year's honorees cover a wide range. Patti Smith, the American singer and poet, won the arts prize. Lionel Messi won in sports. The British novelist Julian Barnes won in literature. Studio Ghibli, the Japanese animation studio behind films such as Spirited Away, won the communication and humanities prize. Christina Koch, the NASA astronaut, received the Concordia award.
For American readers, the mix of honorees makes the list easy to follow. Smith and Koch are both Americans, and the Ghibli and Messi honors reach well beyond Spain. The ceremony itself was built around the family, with the royal parents and daughters appearing together at each stage of the week.
Leonor's solo reception is the clearest sign yet of her part in these events. She greeted the winners without her parents, and then she carried out the presentations on stage. Spanish outlets and the royal household will continue to document how her role grows from here.
