Billy Idol performed "Rebel Yell" with the school band at Griffiths Middle School in Downey, California, in an event held with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Save the Music. Rolling Stone reported the visit on 23 October 2026.

Idol is a 2026 inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the museum that honours artists for their influence on rock music. At Griffiths he sang the song with the students' band behind him, then took part in a question-and-answer session with the pupils.

The visit is part of a wider effort. Save the Music and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation have announced an initiative to fund at least 25 new music programs in schools over the next three years. Part of the plan is to bring Rock Hall inductees into classrooms, so students can hear from working musicians in person. CBS Los Angeles reported that the initiative targets public schools.

One of the local schools has already been named. Doty Middle School, in the Downey Unified School District, will receive a $55,000 (US dollars) music education grant in 2027 to buy new instruments.

For a school band, instruments are the everyday tools of the job. A grant like this decides which students get to play, and which instruments they practise on, for years to come. The funding will arrive in 2027, so the change will come after this week's visit has faded from the headlines.
