Mass Effect cosmetic items that had appeared in Battlefield 6 seem to have been removed, days after Electronic Arts (EA) shut down BioWare, the studio that makes the Mass Effect games. Eurogamer reported the change on 23 October 2026.

The Mass Effect items showed up in Battlefield 6's cosmetic menus when Season Five launched. A cosmetic item changes how a character or weapon looks but does not affect play. The set included a Normandy ship weapon charm, sci-fi-style weapons and N7 tags, the markings linked to the series' soldier class. Players could see them but could not unlock or buy them.

The closure came first. Reuters reported on 21 October 2026 that EA planned to close BioWare and lay off staff, as the company narrowed its game slate, the list of games it plans to release. According to Forbes, BioWare had operated for more than three decades. EA also cancelled the next Mass Effect game, which was in early development.

EA laid off 400 workers as part of the decision, which included closing BioWare entirely. The company was taken private in a US$55bn leveraged buyout, a deal funded largely with borrowed money. The buyers were Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, Jared Kushner's Affinity Partners and Silver Lake.

Content creator Dantics has also shared his account of the cancelled project. He said he was part of a private "Mass Effect Council", a community feedback group that advised BioWare's team. In a GameSpot report published on 23 October 2026, he described the game, which he called Mass Effect Universe, as set more than 600 years after the Reaper War, the conflict at the centre of the series' first trilogy.

Dantics said players would take on a customisable N7 agent. He compared the feel of the game to a cross between John Wick and James Bond. He said the agent would use experimental implanted technology to hack and manipulate the environment, similar to hacking in Cyberpunk 2077, and that missions would offer Hitman-style freedom in how they were completed. He also said the game would link the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies through relays built by the Geth, a machine species from the series, and that Liara T'Soni would return as a powerful Asari Matriarch.

These are Dantics' descriptions of a project that was never released. The series has a large fan base, and N7 Day, which is observed on 7 November, is one of the dates fans mark each year. For now, the Battlefield 6 items are the only visible Mass Effect content left in that game, and players who had not unlocked them have no way to get them.
