EA Cancels Next Mass Effect and Closes BioWare, as Fan Merch Keeps Coming

Electronic Arts has cancelled the next Mass Effect game and closed its developer, BioWare, entirely, according to GameSpot, which reported the moves on November 5, 2026. In the same days, fans have been getting nudges to buy mugs and hoodies.

The cancelled game was reported as Mass Effect 5. Mass Effect is a science-fiction role-playing series in which players make choices that shape the story. In an earlier statement titled "Building EA's Next Chapter," dated October 21, 2026, EA said the Mass Effect project at BioWare was in early development. Read the EA statement.

According to GameSpot, EA chose to pursue a new Star Wars Battlefront game over funding the next Mass Effect and BioWare's continued operation. The decision sits inside a wider organisational shift that included layoffs and the cancellation of a new The Sims game.

EA was taken private by an investor group led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. The deal involved billions of dollars of debt.

Fans have responded with a petition. A Change.org petition titled "save Mass Effect" has drawn more than 300,000 signatures. Change.org is a website where anyone can start an online petition.

The merchandise side has kept running. N7 Day, the annual fan holiday for the series, falls on November 7. Ahead of it, EA promoted Mass Effect products on the BioWare Gear Store, the official shop for BioWare merchandise and gifts. According to GameSpot, the store's social media account had posted nothing for a month before it resumed to promote the items. EA also published eight more posts pointing fans to the store, featuring mugs, tote bags, clothing and shoes.

One post, published at 6:56 PM on November 5, invited fans to "Celebrate the Legacy" for #N7Day. It tagged the Mass Effect and BioWare accounts and linked to gear.bioware.com. The store's N7 Day posts follow a pattern from last year. In 2025, EA ran an N7 Day giveaway offering five Mass Effect merchandise bundles with N7 gear, the military-style badge that is a recurring symbol in the games.

Mass Effect fans now have two stories running side by side. One is a studio closing and a game that will not be made. The other is a shop asking them to celebrate the franchise's holiday. Both come from the same company, and both are happening this week.
