Judi Dench Says Vision Loss Has Ended Her Acting Work

Dame Judi Dench says she can no longer act on stage or in films because her sight has failed. The 91-year-old actor made the statement in an interview with BBC Radio 4's Today programme, which the BBC reported on 21 October 2026.
Dench told presenter Emma Barnett that she "can't do a play anymore" and "can't do a film anymore." She said: "I can't be on stage," and "I can't read anymore." She attributes both to vision loss.
The actor was first diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration in 2012. The condition, often shortened to AMD, damages the central part of the retina, the area at the back of the eye that gives us sharp detail. It affects the centre of vision, leaving the edges of sight largely intact. That is why reading, recognising faces and following a script become hard, even when a person can still see the room around them.
Dench described the everyday effects with humour. She said her vision loss has led her to approach the wrong person and give them "an almost hug" on several occasions. Deadline carried the same account of her remarks.
She has a long screen record. Her recent film work includes Belfast (2021) and Allelujah (2022), with a cameo in Spirited (2022). Her most recent role, according to the same reports, was a voice part. She played a smart fridge invented by Polly, the character played by Claire Foy, in The Magic Faraway Tree.
Dench is not stepping away from public life altogether. She said she still plans to make public appearances and to speak openly about her condition. Radio, in particular, has stayed close to her heart. "The radio has always been important to me," she said during the interview.
For many fans, the news is a reminder of how much of an actor's work depends on eyesight. Scripts are read, lines are learned from the page, and rehearsal rooms are full of printed text. Dench's decision to speak publicly about her limits, while keeping a route into broadcasting open, shows one way of living with a long-term condition in the public eye.
No new film or stage project was announced alongside them.
