Constance Wu Says the Crazy Rich Asians HBO Script Is "Very Funny"

Constance Wu has read the script for the Crazy Rich Asians sequel series, and she says it is "really funny" and "very funny." The actress, who played Rachel Chu in the 2018 film, told Deadline that she is set to reprise the role in the HBO show.
HBO has given the series a series order, meaning the channel has committed to a full run of episodes. Deadline reported the order in early October 2026, after about two years of development. The show is an eight-episode drama, with each episode running one hour.
Adele Lim is showrunning the series, which means she runs the writers' room and oversees the scripts. She also co-wrote the 2018 Crazy Rich Asians film. The series was developed by Lim, Jon M. Chu, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson.
The returning cast includes Wu as Rachel Chu, and Henry Golding as Nick Young. Ronny Chieng is set to play Eddie Chang, and Michelle Yeoh will recur as Eleanor Sung-Young. Deadline's October report noted that Chieng is an Emmy winner and Yeoh is an Oscar winner.
The show's road to a series order was not straight. Deadline reported in November 2024 that HBO was exploring a Crazy Rich Asians series, which was an early sign of interest before the order came.
Filming is taking place in New York City. Production on the series starts next year, in 2027. Wu's comments are the first public description of the scripts she has read, and the production schedule now sets the next milestone.
For fans of the film, the news means the story of Rachel and Nick is moving to television with much of the original team involved. For everyone else, it is a reminder that the film's characters are now heading into a longer format, with eight episodes to tell the story.
