Hull City and Brentford drew 1-1 at the MKM Stadium on Sunday, with Oli McBurnie's penalty putting Hull ahead before Dango Ouattara levelled for the visitors.

The match kicked off at 14:00 GMT. It was the first time the two clubs had met in a top-flight fixture, meaning the Premier League, England's top division.

The opening goal came in the 24th minute. Aaron Hickey brought down Tim Iroegbunam inside the area, and the referee pointed to the spot. McBurnie took the kick and placed it into the bottom right corner. Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher guessed the right way but could not reach it. The Guardian reported that it was McBurnie's first Premier League goal for more than 900 days.

Brentford struck back in the 63rd minute. Igor Thiago played the ball into a dangerous position, and Ouattara turned it in to make it 1-1.

The shot count was closer than the scoreline might suggest, though not in Hull's favour. Hull had 12 shots, two of them on target. Brentford had 14 attempts, six of them on target. ESPN gave Hull an expected goals figure of 1.84. Expected goals, or xG, is a way of measuring the quality of chances, based on where and how shots were taken. Brentford's attacks were more frequent, but Hull's chances were, by that measure, good ones.

Hull's home record stayed unbeaten, which will please a crowd that has seen their side lose ground in recent weeks. The club had gone seven games without a win, so the point ends that run in the only way that counts for a draw: it stops the slide, but it does not lift them far up the table. Hull's manager, Sergej Jakirovic, will want more than one goal from open play and a penalty in his next match.

For McBurnie, though, the afternoon will be remembered. A striker waiting more than 900 days for a league goal finally got one, and it came from the spot, with the ball hit to the corner and the keeper left diving the wrong way. For a club looking for its first win in a while, that moment gave the home fans something to cheer.
