Musk Promises an AI-Made Feature Film of The Odyssey by Year's End
Elon Musk says his AI tool, Grok Imagine, will produce a full-length film of Homer's ancient Greek epic before the year is out, and it will be made entirely with artificial intelligence. Instead of actors on a set, the images and motion are generated by computer software from written instructions.
Musk first announced the plan in July, describing a feature-length version of the poem that he said would be historically accurate. In a post on X, he wrote: "Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer." Variety reported the promise and the deadline.
The first public step arrived in late October. On 24 October (GMT), the official Grok Imagine account and Musk's own account on X both posted Episode 1 of an Odyssey series made with the tool. The episode runs seven minutes.
Variety reported that the release credited creative collaboration to Wonder Studios and to director Dev Walker. The posts also invited viewers to comment if they wanted a full breakdown of how the episode was made, which suggests the team may explain its process in more detail.
The gap between the promise and the release is worth noting. Musk's pledge is for a single feature-length film. The first piece shared so far is labelled as an episode of a series. Both are presented as parts of the same project, and the difference in format is one of the details the coming weeks will test.
For general audiences, the project sits at the centre of a debate that has been running through the film industry for some time. Studios, unions and actors have all asked how far AI-made images can go in storytelling, and who owns and is paid for them. A tool that promises a whole film, rather than a few effects shots, takes that question a step further.
Musk's deadline is set for the end of 2026. Whether a full-length film appears by then, and in what form, is the next thing to watch.
