Trump Calls Bill Maher a "Complete and Total Loser" in Record-Long Post
President Donald Trump has attacked Bill Maher in a 1,318-word post on Truth Social, his social media platform. The post went up on Sunday, 25 October, and it is the longest Truth Social post Trump has written, according to CNN's analysis and a third-party tracking firm.
Maher hosts Real Time With Bill Maher, a weekly talk show on HBO. The attack followed jokes he made about Trump on the Friday episode, including mockery of Trump's approval ratings and remarks about men's physiques, The Hollywood Reporter reported.
In the post, Trump called Maher a "complete and total loser." He described the show as a "Low Rated Show" on "equally Low Rated HBO."
The timing stands out. Only days earlier, the two men had dined together at the White House, which Trump had described as a "great dinner." In February, Trump said on social media that he regretted inviting Maher to that dinner.
Trump also wrote that he would not waste time fact-checking Maher, because "He isn't worth it," according to Deadline.
Maher has a different kind of recognition coming up. Earlier this year, the Kennedy Center said he would receive its Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, an honour given for comedy, the Associated Press reported.
For viewers, the story is simple. A sitting president spent a long Sunday post on a television host's jokes, and the host's show is one of HBO's best-known weekly programmes. Whether the row changes anything for either side is not yet clear, but the post itself is now on the record in full.
