The BBC and RTÉ have greenlit Season 2 of The Walsh Sisters, and the new run is already in production. Greenlit means the broadcasters have approved the series and will pay to make it. Deadline reported the news on 26 October.

The comedy-drama is based on a book series by Marian Keyes and follows five Irish sisters. Its characters come from five of Keyes' novels, including Rachel's Holiday. The BBC has confirmed that the second series will run to six episodes.

The returning cast is large. Caroline Menton, Danielle Galligan, Máiréad Tyers, Stefanie Preissner and Louisa Harland all reprise their roles as the five sisters. Harland, known for Derry Girls, leads the cast. Aidan Quinn and Carrie Crowley come back as the sisters' parents, with Crowley playing Mammy Walsh. Preissner also adapts Keyes' books for television, alongside her acting work.

The first series has already left a mark at home. Deadline reported that Season 1 was RTÉ's highest-rated drama of the past two years. It was also shortlisted in the scripted category at the RTS Awards in March 2026, alongside The Traitors Ireland, according to RTÉ.

The series is a joint effort. Cuba Pictures, part of Vice Studios, and Metropolitan Pictures make it for RTÉ, with the BBC, Screen Ireland and the distributor Cineflix Rights also involved. Cineflix Rights is selling the show around the world, and it also brokered the Disney+ deal.

Disney+ has picked up second-window UK rights. That means the show will air first on the BBC and then arrive on Disney+. Disney+ is among the buyers for the series, which has also sold in several other markets:

  • United States: Roku's subscription streaming service Howdy acquired exclusive US rights, RTÉ reported on 23 October.
  • Australia: Stan holds the rights.
  • Israel: Yes acquired the series.
  • Balkans: Pickbox acquired it for the region.
  • Nordics: Cineflix sold it to TV2 in Norway, TV4 in Sweden and MTV Oy in Finland.

For viewers, the answer to "where do I watch it?" depends on the country. In Ireland and the UK, the BBC and RTÉ come first, with Disney+ following in the UK. In the US, Howdy is the exclusive home. Other markets will each have their own broadcaster or streamer.

The programme has already taken a long road. Behind each deal is a cast reuniting, a production crew and a story that now has a second run to tell. Season 2 is in production, and the next step is the broadcast schedule, which has not yet been announced.
