Gareth Batty steps down as Surrey coach to join Chennai Super Kings

Gareth Batty has stepped down as Surrey's head coach to join Chennai Super Kings as an assistant coach, according to BBC Sport.
Surrey have lost the man who guided them to a rare run of success. Under Batty, the club won three County Championship titles in a row in his first three seasons in charge. The Championship is England's main four-day domestic competition, and the BBC reports that no team had won three in succession for nearly 60 years. He also took Surrey to T20 Finals Day twice. That is the showpiece day of England's Twenty20 competition, where each side bats for 20 overs.
Batty knows the club well. He first played for Surrey from 1998 to 2001, after leaving Yorkshire. He then spent seven seasons at Worcestershire before returning to The Oval in 2010. He captained Surrey between 2015 and 2017. In that time he played more than 350 times for the club and took more than 500 wickets across all formats. He was an off-spin bowler, which means he spun the ball from the off side to the batter's leg side, and he played nine Tests for England.
He retired as a player in 2021 and joined Surrey's coaching staff straight away. He was appointed head coach in 2022. The BBC describes his departure as ending a 21-year association with the club.
Chennai Super Kings are one of the best-known teams in the Indian Premier League, the big franchise Twenty20 league held in India. An assistant coach works alongside the head coach, helping with training, planning and match preparation. The move takes Batty from the English county game into one of the most prominent franchise setups in world cricket.
For Surrey fans, the story is about continuity. A coach who spent most of his adult cricket life at the club has moved on at a time when the team is coming off its strongest stretch in decades. For cricket watchers more generally, it is another reminder that coaches now move between countries and leagues as easily as players do.
