Burton Opens an Archive Shop on Depop for Its 50th Anniversary

Burton, the American snowboard and outerwear brand, is selling 50 pieces from its own archive on Depop, the secondhand fashion app. Every item in the shop is priced at $50.50 or less.
The shop opens on Wednesday, 28 October, at depop.com/burtonsnowboards. It is tied to Burton's 50th anniversary and is open to U.S. shoppers, according to WWD.
An archive is a brand's back catalogue of older clothing and gear. The Depop selection runs from the late 1970s into the 2000s. It is sourced directly from Burton's archive and includes pieces from five labels: Burton, Analog, Ronin, Mark XIII and Idiom.
The launch is the first drop in Depop's new "Brand Shop Drop" series, a set of limited releases from individual brands on the platform. A second Burton drop is due in mid-November, WWD reported.
That second drop has already been previewed. Burton's own Facebook post from 19 October lists the '94 Twin as part of its 50th anniversary Drop 2. The post describes the release as archive-inspired, with outerwear from the 1990s among its themes.
For anyone who has watched brands turn to their old stock, the appeal of this model is simple. A heritage label gets to sell older pieces to a new audience, and the buyer gets items that are no longer made. The price cap also sets the shop apart from the high prices often attached to vintage and collector pieces.
Depop is one of several resale platforms where secondhand clothing changes hands. Brands have increasingly used such apps to sell their own past collections, rather than leaving that work to individual resellers.
Burton's shop goes live on Wednesday. The second drop is scheduled for mid-November, and the anniversary releases continue after that.
