Apple has released iOS 27.2, the update that brings Apple Pencil support to the iPhone Duo. The release also extends Siri AI, Apple's assistant with generative features, to five additional languages and adds a set of camera, media and provenance changes. The Verge reported the release on October 26, 2026 (The Verge).

On the iPhone Duo, the Apple Pencil (USB-C) is supported on both the inside and outside screens, according to AppleInsider's October 21 report. The device has a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer screen. Creative Strategies analyst Max Weinbach noted on October 21 that the iPhone Duo was gaining Apple Pencil support with iOS 27.2 (MacRumors). Apple's support documentation lists the iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 as compatible with iOS 27 (Apple Support).

Apple's newsroom said on October 26 that the Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C) are compatible with the new iPad mini. The Apple Pencil Pro is priced at $129 in the U.S. (Apple Newsroom). Stylus support therefore spans the iPhone Duo and the iPad mini in the same release cycle.

On the AI side, iOS 27 introduces the next generation of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI (Apple Support). With iOS 27.2, Siri AI can take suggested actions in Messages and gains support for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, according to The Verge. The same update adds support for SynthID, Google's watermark for AI-generated images, in Photos and Image Playground.

The media and calling changes are smaller in scope. iOS 27.2 adds user profiles to the Apple TV app on iPhone, and it replaces the Up Next queue in Apple Podcasts with a New Episodes list and a Continue Playing section. In FaceTime group calls, dual capture now shows views from both the selfie and rear cameras. The update also includes an "Edge Light" feature for the iPhone Duo, which is intended to illuminate the user's face during video calls.

Apple's support documentation separately describes new iOS 27 features to help parents create safe digital experiences (Apple Support). A separate support article describes iPhone Handoff, which lets users use one phone number between two devices to switch between them (Apple Support).

In my view, the Pencil change is the item with the most direct consequence for developers. Stylus input on the iPhone Duo now has to be handled on two panels of different sizes, with different orientations and different usage contexts. Apps that assumed a single input surface will need testing on both the inner and outer screens before stylus behavior can be relied on.

Taken on its own terms, the SynthID addition is a different kind of change. A watermark embedded in generated images gives downstream tools a provenance signal, but it identifies only content that carries the mark. It does not establish how an unmarked image was made. The practical value will depend on how widely watermarked generators are used and how consistently platforms read the signal.

The broader context here is that iOS 27.2 spreads several AI features across more languages and more surfaces, from Messages to Photos, while the hardware story moves to a new form factor and a new iPad mini. For developers and IT administrators, the near-term work is compatibility testing on the new screens and the new input paths. For users, the most visible changes are the Pencil on the iPhone Duo and the expanded Siri AI language support, both of which arrived in this release.
