Apple's iPhone Duo, priced at $2,000, went on sale at Apple Store locations worldwide on Friday, October 23. Apple describes it as its first foldable iPhone. It has a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch nano-textured inner screen, a glass surface etched to diffuse glare. It is the second model in the line Apple announced on September 9 alongside the iPhone 18 family.

Apple's newsroom says the inner panel is the largest iPhone display the company has made in a foldable design. When opened, Apple says the device is the thinnest iPhone it has made. The repair economics, which Engadget laid out in detail on October 26, sit underneath that.

According to that breakdown, an estimated out-of-warranty repair for the 5.4-inch outer display costs $379. Replacing the 7.6-inch inner screen carries a listed repair cost of $999. Back glass repair starts at $199, battery service is $229, and rear camera repair is also $229. Repair for "other damage" is listed at $1,499. Apple's own iPhone repair page gives a different figure for the same class of problem, listing an estimated service cost of $49 for iPhone Duo cover layer damage. Apple also states that Apple Authorized Service Providers set their own service fees and provide an estimate after inspecting the device, so the final quote at a given shop may vary.

Apple lists iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 among the models covered by its Express Replacement Service, an alternative to in-store or mail-in repair for eligible devices.

AppleCare+ is priced at $20 per month or $200 per year. According to Engadget, AppleCare One costs $20 per month for an individual or $50 per month for a family. Under AppleCare+, reduced service fees range from $19 for cover layer fixes to $99 for "other" damage, and theft and loss coverage carries a $149 fee. Bloomberg reported on July 15 that Apple had raised AppleCare+ monthly prices by 50 cents in its latest increase.

On October 20, Apple announced new and expanding partnerships with U.S. companies that supply materials and components for iPhone Duo and iPhone 18. On October 22, it published a developer update titled "Developers bring incredible new app experiences to iPhone Duo," which points to software that is still being built around a folding display.

The broader context here is the arithmetic a buyer faces. A $2,000 device with a fragile-looking outer surface and a $1,499 quote for "other damage" changes the calculation for anyone choosing between coverage tiers. An AppleCare+ plan at $200 per year, or the reduced fees it offers, sits in a very different cost bracket from an out-of-warranty inner-screen replacement at $999. Owners of earlier foldables will already know the screen is the expensive part. Buyers who have not owned one may only discover it at the first crack.

In my view, the more useful question for prospective owners is less whether the hinge and panel engineering will hold up, and more how repair pricing fits into the total cost of ownership. The figures above make that comparison concrete.

What the device does enable is a larger working surface in a pocket-sized form when opened. For developers, the coming months will show how many apps take advantage of that canvas. For buyers, the decision comes down to whether the price and repair structure suit how they actually use a phone.
