Russia and Ukraine have begun a localised ceasefire, a temporary pause in fighting limited to a particular area, to allow a humanitarian operation to start in Oleshky. The town in southern Ukraine is under Russian occupation.

The pause is meant to make room for aid and evacuations. Under the arrangement, the two sides agreed to a ceasefire beginning October 27 so that aid could be delivered and civilians could leave through humanitarian corridors, which are agreed routes that allow people and supplies to pass through a conflict zone, Reuters reported.

The United States mediated the ceasefire. The White House said Melania Trump had secured the agreement between Russia and Ukraine. Her role was described by the White House.

A Russian commander said Moscow's forces would halt fire on Tuesday, October 27, in connection with the Oleshky ceasefire. Reuters carried the White House and commander statements.

The localised ceasefire has now started, according to US News, which reported that the humanitarian operation was able to begin in the town.
