Amazon MGM Buys International Streaming Rights to Elden Ring Movie

Amazon MGM is buying the Pay-1 streaming rights to the Elden Ring movie in numerous international markets, in a deal that could be worth tens of millions of US dollars, according to Deadline. Pay-1 is the first paid window, the period after a film leaves cinemas when it can be watched on paid streaming services.
The film is based on the 2022 action role-playing game from FromSoftware, published by Bandai Namco. Deadline reports that the game has sold more than 30 million copies. Hidetaka Miyazaki guided its creation, and it drew on a story by George R.R. Martin, who is also a producer on the film.
Alex Garland wrote and directed the adaptation. Kit Connor plays the lead, a character who fights monsters and dragons. Cailee Spaeny, Ben Whishaw, Tom Burke, Jonathan Pryce and Nick Offerman co-star. Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno and Ruby Cruz are also in the cast.
Filming wrapped over the summer. Industrial Light & Magic, the visual effects company, is handling post-production, the editing, effects and sound work that follows shooting. A24, the film's distributor, has set 3 March 2028 as the theatrical release date, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Deadline reports the film is being prepared for cinemas and IMAX screens.
The budget is a large one. Deadline puts it between US$175 million and US$200 million, closer to the higher figure. GameSpot reports it could reach US$200 million, which would make it the most expensive film A24 has made. A24 is paying for the whole production itself.
That financing shapes how the film is being sold. A24 is taking Elden Ring to the American Film Market in Los Angeles, a trade event where studios and distributors sell rights to films, often before they are finished. Parts of the script are being kept from buyers to avoid spoilers. Rather than sending the script digitally, A24 is booking flights for staff to meet potential international buyers, so a company representative is present during script reads.
GameSpot reports that the script runs at least 180 pages, which could mean a finished film of up to three hours. The same report says Amazon's Twitch, its live-streaming service, could host "interesting activations" linked to the film as part of the Amazon MGM deal. Neither Amazon nor A24 has confirmed what those would be.
A24 is also planning a presentation for the film at the American Film Market, and it may include footage. For players who have spent time in the game's world, that presentation may be the first public look at the film, ahead of its March 2028 release.
