Netflix Picks Up AWOL, an Hour-Long Dramedy From Daley and Goldstein

Netflix has bought AWOL, an hour-long dramedy series package, Deadline reported on 27 October 2026. A dramedy is a show that blends comedy and drama. A package is a ready-made project, usually a series idea with its creative team attached, that a streaming service can buy before any episodes exist.
According to Deadline, the deal came in a competitive situation. In trade terms, that means more than one buyer was interested in the project. The package comes from Craig Rowin, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, and Rowin will write the scripts.
Daley and Goldstein will serve as executive producers through their GoldDay Productions banner. An executive producer is a senior role that guides a show from the early stages through to the finished product, without necessarily writing or directing it. Sara Smith of GoldDay Productions is overseeing the project.
AWOL is now in development at Netflix. Development is the early stage, when a series is written, shaped and planned before filming is approved. It is the step that comes before a production start, and it is where the writers' room does its first and most detailed work.
Packages like this are often pitched to several platforms at once. That is why a deal can become competitive, with more than one service bidding for the same idea. For the creative team, a sale of this kind moves the project from pitch to planning, and the next decisions sit with the platform and the producers.
For viewers, the news marks the start of a process rather than a finished show. Plenty of projects that reach development never reach a screen, and plenty take a long time to get there. For now, AWOL is a Netflix project in its early stage, and the people behind it are the three named creators, the GoldDay team and the writers who will turn the idea into scripts.
