Rudi Fuchs, the Dutch art historian and curator, has died in Amsterdam. He was 84.

His family announced the death on Sunday to the Amsterdam daily Het Parool. According to NOS, he died on Sunday evening in his home city. Wikipedia gives the date as 25 October 2026.

Fuchs was born Rudolf Herman Fuchs on 28 April 1942. He built a career in the art world as a writer, teacher and museum leader, and he is best known outside the Netherlands for the work he did in Germany and at home.

In 1982 he was artistic director of Documenta 7, the major contemporary art exhibition held in Kassel, Germany. The artistic director chooses the artists and shapes the overall show, so the role carries wide influence over what the public sees.

From 1993 to 2003 he led the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the city's museum of modern and contemporary art. That decade placed him at the head of one of the Netherlands' best-known public collections, and it is the post Dutch media most often associate with his name.

Fuchs is remembered as a scholar who spent much of his life in galleries, lecture halls and exhibition spaces. His death is a loss for the Dutch art world, which he had served for decades.

Fuchs was 84 when he died. His family has not, in the reporting so far, said where a memorial will be held.
