Guitar Wolf is headlining a new film, Wild Zero Overdrive, and its makers are looking for the money to finish it. According to Variety, the project will be pitched in Tokyo at the Tokyo Gap-Financing Market.

The film is directed by Takeuchi Tetsuro, and it follows his 1999 film Wild Zero. In that earlier film, Guitar Wolf fought aliens and zombies who were trying to take over the planet, as ScreenAnarchy described it. The pair had also sought crowdfunding for a sequel called Wild Zero 2 in 2024.

The production is a Japan-Canada project made by Takegei Company Limited. Takeuchi is putting his own money toward the budget, Variety reported. Casting is underway. Takabatake Aki, a producer based in Toronto, is also involved.

The Tokyo Gap-Financing Market is a meeting place for films that still need money. "Gap financing" means money that covers the shortfall left after the main funding is in place. The market runs as part of TIFFCOM, the content market attached to the Tokyo International Film Festival. This year is its 7th edition, and it is held at Tokyo Port City Takeshiba Port Studio from October 28 to 30. Organisers selected 24 projects for 2026, according to TIFFCOM.

Five of those projects are presented jointly with Frontières, the genre-film market from Canada. Wild Zero Overdrive is one of the projects in the lineup, and its team will pitch it to industry professionals during the event.

The producers want three things from the room. They are seeking more financing, distributors in Japan and abroad to release the film, and international sales agents, the people who take films to cinemas and streaming services in other countries. None of these deals has been announced.

The pitch is a common first step for projects at this stage. A film can spend a year or more moving from a pitch to a finished print, and every new partner brings its own conditions. The release date, budget figure and cast list are still to come.

For a general reader, the story is simple. A familiar name from Japanese rock is back in a film project, the director is funding part of it himself, and the team is now asking buyers and backers in Tokyo to help carry it the rest of the way.
