Indonesia and Kyrgyzstan Team Up on Horror Film 'The Land of Jinn'

A supernatural horror film, "The Land of Jinn", has become the first co-production between Indonesia and Kyrgyzstan. The project was unveiled at the Tokyo Gap-Financing Market, according to Variety, which reported it on 28 October 2026.
The film is directed by Kevin Rahardjo, and its screenplay is by Makbul Mubarak and Tumpal Tampubolon. The story follows a young Indonesian woman who travels to Kyrgyzstan to find a mystical healer. She hopes the healer can save the baby she is carrying. Deadline reported in September that the film is based on a Kyrgyz legend.
Shooting took place in Kyrgyzstan's Issyk-Kul region and in Jakarta. The film is being made in English, Indonesian and Kyrgyz. It is now in post-production, the stage where editing, sound and visual effects are completed, and its release is planned for 2027.
Two production teams are behind the film. Yulia Evina Bhara and Amerta Kusuma produce for Jakarta-based KawanKawan Media. On the Kyrgyz side, Sultan Pirzhan and Elvira Sarieva of FreeMinds and Maksat Bolotbek of Bairak Group are the producers. Variety's earlier coverage described Kyrgyzstan as an equal co-producer, which means both countries share the making of the film as partners.
The Tokyo Gap-Financing Market is a meeting place for filmmakers who need more money to finish a project. "Gap financing" means money raised to cover the shortfall between what a film already has and its full budget. The market runs as part of TIFFCOM, the content market linked to the Tokyo International Film Festival. This is the seventh edition of the market, and 24 projects were selected for the 2026 lineup. TIFFCOM runs from 28 to 30 October 2026 at Tokyo Port City Takeshiba Port Studio.
Producers use the market to pitch projects to potential backers, distributors and partners, usually through one-on-one meetings. Screen Daily reported in September that the market had teamed up with Frontières, a Canadian platform for genre films, on a slate of horror and other genre titles. "The Land of Jinn" was listed among the projects, though it sits outside that partnership.
The market has also set up its first open pitch event. "The Land of Jinn" is one of the pitch titles on the programme. For a film still looking for its final pieces of money, a co-production between two countries is a practical route. Each partner brings local funding, crew and locations into one project.
The 2027 date is the only release timing given.
