The Drop Ends Season 1 With Its Future Still Open

FX has not yet said whether The Drop, the Snowfall spinoff, will get a second season. The first season ended with its finale, "Hercules," on October 27.
The show picks up after Snowfall's series finale in 2023. It follows characters from that drama as they chase a career in West Coast rap, a scene the show's trailer described as a "New Gold Rush." Malcolm Spellman, who created the series and serves as showrunner, told The Hollywood Reporter that the season-one ending is "just the beginning" of the central family's story in the music business.
The cast includes Gail Bean as Wanda, Asante Blackk as Lamar, Simmie "Buddy" Sims III as Artillery, Aleyse Shannon as Dara, Isaiah John as Leon and Hanad Abdi as Keith. Wanda and Leon are two of the survivors of the original Snowfall series. New episodes stream weekly at 9 p.m. PT on Hulu.
In the finale, Keith is murdered. Label executives try to use his death for publicity and rush out an album by Artillery and Lamar as a compilation with other artists. The season closes with Wanda, Lamar and Artillery in control of their own futures after breaking through in music.
Renewal is the decision that brings a show back for another season. Spellman said that, at the time of his interview, he had not heard from FX about The Drop's prospects. A show waiting on that answer is what the industry calls "on the bubble," meaning its renewal is still undecided. Spellman said he was "not worried." He pointed to feedback from fans, which he said told him the show is a hit.
He also described a longer plan. He already has ideas for seasons two and three. Those seasons, he said, would show money and gangs damaging the story from inside and outside, and record labels manipulating and destroying culture. He said he wanted season one to end with each character introduced at a moment of crisis and just getting started in the music business.
Spellman added that what viewers see in the finale and the final three episodes "will be completely normal all throughout season two." Other executive producers credited on the show's official FX page include Thomas Schlamme, Dave Andron, Michael London, Trevor Engelson, Julie DeJoie and Paul Garnes.
For viewers, the next question is simple. FX has not announced a decision either way. Until it does, the story of Wanda, Lamar and Artillery stays unfinished on screen and off.
