Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto will receive the Outstanding Achievement Award at the Fashion Awards on 30 November, held at the Royal Albert Hall, a large concert hall in London. WWD reported the announcement.

The Fashion Awards are the annual prize evening organised by the British Fashion Council, the trade body that promotes fashion design in the United Kingdom. Laura Weir is the council's chief executive.

The council said the award recognises Yamamoto's contribution to the global fashion industry and his influence on generations of designers. The prize goes to a British or international designer whose career has helped shape and redefine fashion through creativity, originality and innovation.

Yamamoto launched his label in Tokyo in 1972. He later started Y-3, a sportswear line he made with the German sportswear company Adidas, which began in 2003. The two names have worked together for more than two decades.

Earlier winners of the same award include Brunello Cucinelli, Tom Ford, Valentino Garavani, Yvon Chouinard, Giorgio Armani, Miuccia Prada, Ralph Lauren and Karl Lagerfeld. Sandra Choi will receive a Special Recognition Award at the same ceremony.

Yamamoto has been honoured before. In 2017, he accepted a lifetime achievement award at the Design for Asia gala dinner in Hong Kong.

The Royal Albert Hall ceremony will be the first time the Outstanding Achievement Award and the Special Recognition Award are presented at the same event in this list of names, with both recipients on the bill together.
