Reddit Splits Its Feed Into Following and For You

Reddit has launched a new feed layout with two streams: a Following feed and a For You feed. The company's newsroom post, "Explore More Communities with Reddit's New Feed Updates," went up on October 28, 2026, and The Verge reported the same day.
The Following feed shows posts from the subreddits a user subscribes to. The For You feed mixes posts from those same subreddits with recommendations based on the user's interests, which can reach beyond them. The two streams differ in where their content comes from: one draws only on joined communities, the other adds material chosen by interest.
Reddit also said the app will remember which feed a user opened last and reopen on that feed the next time the user returns, according to The Verge. The change is small in navigation terms, but it decides which feed a returning user sees first, and therefore which stream shapes the first impression of a session.
The announcement builds on earlier feed mechanics. In February 2022, Reddit introduced a Discover Tab, a way to find content and communities by filtering the feed to a specific topic. Its "Following" option, however, showed the redditor accounts a user follows, not subreddits. The new Following feed uses the same label for a different object, so a user who has used both will find the term describing accounts in one place and communities in another.
Reddit has also added visibility controls before. In June 2025 it introduced a "Content and activity" setting that lets users decide, subreddit by subreddit, what content appears on their profile. That setting governs profile exposure rather than feed composition, so it is a separate control, but it raises the same question of how much a user curates what others see.
In my view, the central trade-off here is between predictability and discovery. A Following feed gives a deterministic view of subscriptions, which is easy to reason about and easy to audit. A For You feed depends on a recommendation layer whose inputs and ranking Reddit has not described in detail in these materials. Users who want a bounded feed will likely favor the first; users who want exposure to new communities will find the second more useful. The default setting, and which feed the app reopens on, will shape how many people actually encounter each.
For moderators and long-established subreddits, the stakes differ. Their content now reaches the For You feed alongside recommendations, which changes how a community competes for attention across the platform.
The broader context is that Reddit has spent several years balancing a subscription model, which rewards loyalty to specific communities, against discovery, which brings in readers who have not yet joined. The two feeds make that balance explicit in the interface. Whether the split turns out to be useful will depend on how users actually move between them.
