Kay Cannon Set to Write and Direct Romantic Comedy 'Single at the Wedding' for New Line

Kay Cannon will write and direct a new romantic comedy for New Line Cinema, the film studio, Deadline reported on 28 October 2026. The film is called Single at the Wedding.
The story follows Allie, the last single one of her friends. She is determined to find love at her best friend's wedding. It is a simple setup with a built-in deadline: one celebration, and a lot of pressure to meet someone before the speeches begin.
Cannon will re-write the script with Eben Russell. Their work is a new pass on the original screenplay by Anne Sundell. A pass is a fresh round of rewriting on a script that already exists. Sundell developed the original story with Alex Richanbach, who is also attached to the project as an executive producer alongside Cannon.
Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum are producing. Producers oversee the practical side of a film, from budget and schedule to the people hired to make it. Executive producers usually help bring the project together and secure its backing, rather than running the day-to-day work on set.
The deal marks Cannon's first film with New Line. Studios often bring in a writer and director at the same stage, so the person shaping the script can also guide how it is filmed. That approach is common in romantic comedies, where the tone of a script often depends on who is steering it from the first draft onward.
The announcement covers the team and the premise. It does not put a date on when the film might reach cinemas, and it does not say where it will be shot. Those decisions usually come later in a project's life, once the script is settled and the production calendar is drawn up.
For readers following the film business, this is one of the early steps in a long process. A project can change hands, change writers and change shape before a single frame is shot. Each name attached is a decision made by someone.
