World of Warcraft: Forever Will Update Every Four Months

World of Warcraft: Forever will receive major content updates every four months, a slower rhythm than the game has kept since 2022. Principal game designer Kris Zierhut laid out the plan, as GameSpot reported on 28 October 2026.
Zierhut pointed to WoW Classic's Season of Discovery, which received updates every eight to 10 weeks. He said that pace was too fast. Modern World of Warcraft has run on an eight-week update schedule since the Dragonflight expansion launched in 2022. Four months, or 17 weeks, works out to three updates a year.
The slower pace also responds to the long quiet stretches of earlier expansions. Warlords of Draenor and Shadowlands each went six months or more with little new content, according to GameSpot. In Forever, new content will unlock partway through each four-month cycle, following a timed event calendar.
The first big update is planned for Spring 2027. It will add new raids, dungeons and quests, and it will open a new player-versus-player season, where players fight each other. A second major update is slated for Summer 2027. It will bring a new raid, a revamped raid from WoW Classic, two dungeons, a new legendary item with its own quest chain, and changes to professions and the Legacy system, which carries progress across characters. Blizzard showed the content roadmap at BlizzCon 2026.
The game launches on 4 November 2026, at 3:00 p.m. PDT, according to a Blizzard news post dated 12 September 2026. Ahead of launch, IGN reported that the beta was capped at level 30, and that the name reservation system was not working.
IGN's launch interview with Zierhut and Tim Jones, Blizzard's lead Classic designer, covered much of what is new. The game includes DPS meters, which track how much damage each player deals, and a Cooldown Manager for tracking abilities. A new Elwynn Forest quest line sends players after kobolds who have stolen books. Every starting area and zone has new quests, and each rare creature drops unique loot. Trade skills, such as crafting, get new recipes and a bigger role.
The story is also an alternate history. In Forever, the developers stayed in the original world rather than opening the Dark Portal to Outland, the realm that the original game's expansion led players into. The game adds a new playable race, the Skyborne. Zierhut said that a lot of players don't want to play a monster, which he gave as the reason for the Skyborne's design. Northrend, a region from later expansions, may appear in post-launch updates, IGN reported.
For players who buy the Skyborne Epic Pack or the Warcraft Forever Collection, Blizzard's game page lists 30 days of Game Time, the prepaid play time that the game's subscription provides.
For now, the dates are set: a launch in early November, a major update in spring, and another in summer. The next four months will show how the calendar works in practice.
