Jeff Ross surprised Drake with a birthday roast in Houston on Tuesday, 27 October, as the rapper's 40th birthday celebration continued.

The roast was a gift Drake had not seen coming. Billboard reported in September that Drake had said all he wanted for his birthday was to be roasted by Jim Carrey. Instead, the evening belonged to Ross, who calls himself the Roastmaster General.

Ross announced the moment on Instagram with a photo and the caption "Drake enjoying his surprise birthday roast in Houston tonight." He also used Drake's track "Iceman" as the soundtrack to his Instagram Stories update. Drake returned the favour by reposting Ross's selfie to his own Instagram Story, calling him "The F--king General."

The Houston roast was not the only party. Billboard reported that Drake had also rung in 40 with about 400 guests at Casa Cipriani in Manhattan. That party brought a surprise performance from the Backstreet Boys, and Drake joined them on stage for their song "I Want It That Way."

Carrey has his own history with Ross. In September, Carrey roasted Ross with a joke that Ross's mother had to sign a non-disclosure agreement when he was born because he was so ugly. Drake's wish, then, was not an idle one. He had picked the roaster he wanted, and the roast he got was from the man who had been roasted by Carrey.

Drake's public birthday moments have now stretched across more than one city and more than one week. Each stop has had a different mix of comedy and music, and each has been shared widely by the people involved.
