Sony Pictures will release Jumanji: Open World on December 25, and the official trailer is now out. The film's heroes break free of the game console and cause chaos in the real world, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan and Alex Wolff return from the earlier films. Nick Jonas, Morgan Turner, Ser'Darius Blain, Madison Iseman, Rhys Darby and Danny DeVito join the cast.

The trailer plays with the game's famous body-swapping. Johnson's character is shown inhabited by the mother of Wolff's character. Black's avatar is taken over by a male restaurant worker. In one exchange, Black tells Johnson "What a woman," and Johnson replies, "Oh, stop."

Jake Kasdan wrote and directed the film. He co-wrote the script with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg. The producers are Matt Tolmach, Kasdan, Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia.

The new film is billed as the final part of the trilogy. The franchise's last two outings were big earners. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle came out in December 2017 and took more than $950 million at the worldwide box office. The 2019 sequel, The Next Level, took $801 million globally, according to the same report.

The film's release plan is also set. In a post on the franchise's official Facebook page on October 21, the team said Open World would come exclusively to movie theatres this Christmas. That means no early streaming debut, and the film's audience will have to buy a cinema ticket to see it.

For moviegoers, the Christmas Day date puts the film in one of the busiest weeks of the cinema year. Families tend to head to the multiplex over the holidays, which is why studios often open their biggest films then. Sony has now set the date, and the trailer gives the first look at what the new film will be about.

Jumanji first hit cinemas as a 1995 family adventure, and the current series has leaned on its game-board premise for two decades. The new film keeps that premise and moves the action into the real world. The trailer is the first public step, and the film arrives in cinemas on December 25.
