Spider-Man: Brand New Day Targets $465 Million Global Opening, Sony Projects

Sony Pictures is projecting a $195 million domestic opening for Spider-Man: Brand New Day across 4,300 North American theatres, with $270 million more from international markets — a $465 million global launch — when the film arrives on July 31 (The Hollywood Reporter). The domestic figure, which matches third-party tracking services, would make it the biggest debut of 2026, topping Toy Story 5's $159.6 million opening. It would also land in the top 10 domestic opening weekends of all time, above The Lion King (2019) at $191.7 million.

Globally, a $465 million start would rank as Sony's second-best launch, behind only Spider-Man: No Way Home's $600.5 million in 2021, and would surpass Spider-Man 3's $381.6 million global opening from 2007. The last film to clear $200 million domestically was Deadpool & Wolverine at $211.4 million, two years ago.

There is a more aggressive forecast in the mix. Box Office Pro projects the domestic opening could reach $280 million to $300 million — potentially the second-biggest opening weekend of all time (Box Office Pro). Variety, meanwhile, puts the international haul at $275 million to $300 million (Variety).

China is shaping up as a key piece of the puzzle. The film opened there on July 29, and Sony projects a strong showing; local analysts estimate the Chinese box office could reach as much as $250 million (The Hollywood Reporter). Domestically, Brand New Day accounts for 49 percent of this weekend's showtimes as of Wednesday, according to the Boxoffice Company. For comparison, The Odyssey held 22 percent of showtimes when it opened two weekends ago to $124.5 million — the third-biggest 2026 launch so far.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and produced by Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, Brand New Day stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo. Bernthal plays The Punisher. Tramell Tillman also appears in the cast, per Sony's own financial filings. The film holds a 91 percent critics' approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes — below Into the Spider-Verse (97 percent) and No Way Home (93 percent), but strong by any measure. THR chief film critic David Rooney wrote that the film "foregrounds humanity."

Holland, who debuted as Peter Parker in 2016, told the Los Angeles premiere crowd on Monday that he will play Spider-Man "for as long as they'll have me" (The Hollywood Reporter). The title itself was revealed by Holland during Sony's CinemaCon presentation, and he later appeared via a pre-recorded "Hollandgram" at CinemaCon 2026 to debut two new posters.

For Sony, the stakes are straightforward: a $465 million global opening would confirm the Spider-Man franchise as the studio's most reliable engine, second only to its own 2021 record. For exhibitors, a film commanding nearly half of all weekend showtimes is exactly the kind of traffic the theatrical business has been waiting for all summer.
