Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has left hospital and is doing well, five days after he collapsed. Max Eberl, the club's board member for sport, said Kompany was discharged on Wednesday and is doing well given the circumstances.

Kompany was taken ill and rushed to hospital on Friday 23 October, while he was watching Bayern's second team train. Reuters reported the collapse the same day.

Doctors identified the cause as meningeal irritation. This is an inflammation of the thin protective membrane that covers the brain and spinal cord. Kompany had been fighting a virus in the days before he fell ill, and he had missed some training sessions with the first team.

Bayern have not put a date on his return, but the club said it would be a matter of weeks rather than days before he is back in the dugout, the sideline area where coaches watch matches. In his absence, assistant coach Aaron Danks took charge of the team. Under Danks, Bayern won 3-1 at Freiburg.

For Bayern fans, the main news is simple. Their coach is out of hospital and recovering at home, and the job on the touchline is being done by his assistant until he is fit to return. Kompany is one of the best-known figures in the German game, and many supporters will be relieved to hear the update. The club has given no timetable beyond "weeks", so further news will come from Bayern as his recovery continues.
